1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Summary of the Scripture

Immediately after His baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, He is hungry. The tempter comes to Him with three specific temptations:

1. The Lust of the Flesh: To turn stones into bread to satisfy His physical hunger.

2. The Pride of Life: To tempt God by throwing Himself from the pinnacle of the temple, relying on angels to catch Him.

3. The Lust of the Eyes: To worship Satan in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world.
   Each time, Jesus defeats the enemy by quoting Scripture, saying “It is written.” After the third temptation, the devil leaves Him, and angels come and minister to Him.

Key Themes for Prayer

1. The Word as a Weapon: Jesus’ only offensive weapon against temptation was the Word of God. It is “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17).

2. The Timing of Temptation: Trials often come after great spiritual highs (like Jesus’ baptism). Vigilance is required at all times.

• Pray that when you are physically, emotionally, or spiritually depleted (like Jesus after the fast), you will not be easily swayed by the enemy’s suggestions.

2. To Wield the Sword of the Spirit

• Pray for a deep hunger to hide God’s Word in your heart, so that when temptation comes, the Holy Spirit can bring the right scripture to your mind.

• Pray for the discernment to recognize when the enemy is twisting Scripture (as he did with the Psalms) and for the wisdom to respond with the truth of the whole counsel of God.

3. For Victory Over the Three Common Temptations

• The Lust of the Flesh: Pray for self-control over physical appetites and the patience to wait on God’s provision rather than taking sinful shortcuts.

• The Pride of Life: Pray for a humble heart that does not test God or presume upon His protection, but trusts His will and His timing.

• The Lust of the Eyes: Pray for a heart that is satisfied in Christ alone, rejecting the enemy’s offer of empty worldly riches and power.

4. For Post-Victory Strength

• Pray that after you have endured a trial, you will be open to receiving the ministry of God’s comfort and rest. Pray that you don’t rush past the “angels” God sends to strengthen you.
