1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

Commentary on the Basic Scripture
Genesis 12:1-8 marks one of the most important transitions in all of Scripture. Up to this point, God had dealt with the world broadly – with Adam, with Noah, with all humanity. But here, God narrows His focus to one man: Abram (later renamed Abraham). This is the birth of the covenant. This is the beginning of a journey that would ultimately lead to the Messiah, to the church, and to every believer who walks by faith.
The first word of God to Abram is a command: “Get thee out.” Three things Abram must leave behind: his country (his wider culture and identity), his kindred (his extended family network), and his father’s house (his immediate family inheritance and covering). God was asking Abram to become unattached from everything that defined him – his land, his people, his lineage. Why? Because God was about to give him something greater: a new land, a great nation, a great name, and a blessing that would extend to all families of the earth.
Notice the pattern: Separation first, then blessing. Abram could not receive the new until he released the old. The familiar had to be surrendered for the promised to be received. And Abram’s response is remarkable: “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him.” No recorded argument. No negotiation. No delay. He was seventy and five years old – not a young man – yet he left everything familiar behind, not knowing exactly where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 later comments on this: “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.”
When Abram arrived in the land of Canaan, he faced a reality: “The Canaanite was then in the land.” The promise was given, but the land was already occupied. The giants were already in residence. This is a crucial lesson: the promise does not always come to an empty, prepared land. Sometimes it comes to a land already occupied by enemies. The presence of the Canaanite did not mean God had lied; it meant Abram would need to fight or trust God to displace the inhabitants.
Then something beautiful happens: “The LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD.” In the middle of uncertainty, in the face of the Canaanite opposition, God appears and confirms the promise. And Abram’s response is to build an altar – a place of worship, sacrifice, and encounter. He then moves to another location, builds another altar, and “called upon the name of the LORD.” Before Abram had a city, he had an altar. Before he had a nation, he had worship. Before he possessed the land, he possessed the presence of God.
For the believer today, Genesis 12:1-8 is a call to leave the familiar in order to receive the promised. It is a call to separation before blessing. It is a call to build altars – to prioritize worship – even when the Canaanites are still in the land.

Prayer Point 1: The Grace to Leave the Familiar

Prayer Point 2: Divine Direction to the Land I Know Not

I do not need to see the whole map; I only need to see the next step. Shew me where to go. Shew me when to move. Shew me whom to leave behind. I trust Thy direction even when I do not see the destination. In Jesus’ name.”

Prayer Point 3: Releasing the Blessing of Abraham Over My Life

Prayer: “Father, I receive the blessing of Abraham upon my life today. Make me great – not in pride, but in purpose. Bless me – not for my comfort alone, but that I may be a blessing to others. Let me be a channel of blessing to my family, to my community, to the nations. Every curse spoken against me – I nullify it by the blood of Jesus. Every hand raised to curse me – let it be cursed. I am blessed to be a blessing. In Jesus’ name.”

Prayer Point 4: Obedience Without Full Knowledge
Scripture Reference: Genesis 12:4 – “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him”
Prayer: “Father, give me the obedience of Abraham. He departed as Thou hadst spoken – not as he had planned, not as his father advised, not as his culture dictated. He simply obeyed. I repent for every time I have delayed obedience because I wanted more information. I repent for every time I have negotiated with Thy command. Today, I choose simple, immediate, complete obedience. Even when I do not understand the destination, I will take the next step. In Jesus’ name.”

Prayer Point 5: Facing the Canaanite – Confronting the Occupier of My Promise

Prayer: “Father, I declare that the presence of the Canaanite doth not mean the absence of the promise. Every enemy occupying my promised land – whether it be debt occupying my finances, sickness occupying my body, fear occupying my mind, or rejection occupying my relationships – I command you to leave. The land belongeth to the Lord. The promise belongeth to me. Canaanite, you are displaced today. In Jesus’ name.”

Declaration 4: The Canaanite Is Displaced
“I declare that every Canaanite occupying my promised land is hereby displaced. Every enemy sitting on my blessing – get off now. Every debt occupying my finances – leave. Every sickness occupying my body – flee. Every fear occupying my mind – scatter. Every rejection occupying my relationships – dissolve. The land belongeth to the Lord, and the Lord hath given it to me. Canaanite, you must go. In Jesus’ name.”
Declaration 5: I Have a Divine Appearance
“I declare that the Lord appeareth unto me today. Not a distant God – a present God. Not a silent God – a speaking God. Not a hidden God – a revealing God. The Lord is appearing in my situation. The Lord is appearing in my home. The Lord is appearing in my finances. The Lord is appearing in my health. I will not miss His appearance. My eyes are open. My spirit is ready. Appear, Lord!”
Declaration 6: I Build Altars Everywhere
“I declare that I am an altar-builder. Wherever I pitch my tent, I build an altar. In my home – an altar of prayer. In my workplace – an altar of integrity. In my heart – an altar of worship. I will not live an altar-less life. I will not raise an altar-less family. I will not build an altar-less career. Altars follow me. Worship marks me. Sacrifice defines me. I call upon the name of the Lord in every place.”
Declaration 7: My Expected End Is Arriving
“I declare that just as Abram journeyed to a land God would shew him, I am journeying to my expected end. I may not see it yet, but I am getting closer. Every step of obedience shortens the distance. Every altar I build accelerates my arrival. My promised land is not a myth. My blessing is not a fantasy. I am on the way. And I will not stop until I arrive. In Jesus’ name.”
Declaration 8: I Will Call Upon the Name of the Lord
“I declare that from this day forward, I will call upon the name of the Lord. Not in emergency only – in everyday life. Not in desperation only – in devotion. The name of the Lord is my refuge, my strong tower, my battle axe, my peace. I call upon that name now – over my family, over my finances, over my future. The name of the Lord is above every name, and I speak that name with authority. Hallelujah!”

“Father, I thank Thee for the Basic Scripture of today – Genesis chapter 12, the call of Abraham.
